welcome to the META BUILD newsletter! We are excited to share our latest progress with you. This is an opportunity to connect with fellow engineers, professors, and experts in renewable energy and AI. Don’t forget to follow us on LinkedIn for exclusive updates, and visit our META BUILD project website to dive deeper into our innovative solutions.
META BUILD kicked off in January 2024 with the ambitious goal of meeting the decarbonisation targets set by the EU Fit for 55 plan. In our first semester, we have made significant strides. Our partners have developed initial specifications for both hardware technologies (such as heat pumps and PVTs) and software solutions (including Energy Home Systems, Digital Twins, and LCA models).
We have also drafted a preliminary deployment plan for our Front Runners, outlining Business Use Cases and scenarios to test our technologies against key performance indicators. This deployment plan, along with KPI test results, will be crucial in validating our project objectives—a process currently engaging all our partners.
We invite you to join us on this journey. Explore behind the scenes of
META BUILD and witness how we are paving the way
for a sustainable future.
Warm regards,
Alexios Lekidis

META BUILD Kickoff in Athens
On January 30-31, 2024, the META BUILD team gathered in Athens to chart our future activities. This kickoff meeting was a vital opportunity for partners to connect, define roles, and foster collaboration.
Coordination: the meeting was effectively led by our project coordinator, Alexios Lekidis.
Interactive Workshop: sn the second day, CARTIF facilitated a workshop where participants brainstormed on various META BUILD pilot projects.
EC Insight: Dr. Pau Rey-Garcia from the European Commission joined us online to provide an overview of EC/CINEA and project expectations.
In April, the META BUILD team joined forces with the WeForming Horizon Europe project to explore synergies in energy management and building efficiency. This collaboration promises to drive changes in energy optimisation.
Key meeting Insights:
Building electrification
Energy efficiency
Smart energy management
Zero-Carbon Ecosystem
META BUILD also proudly represented WeForming at EUSEW and had the pleasure of meeting our partner HOLISTIC onsite.
#SmartEnergyCluster projects focus on merging different energy services and incorporating non-energy benefits whilst overcoming market fragmentation and fostering cooperation. This inclusive approach bridges gaps and creates a common ground for business development across different segments.
The cluster also aims to communicate the projects’ activities and success stories to groups interested in smart energy solutions in order to amplify the impact of innovative service offerings, reduced energy costs for end-users, and faster payback periods for sustainable energy investments.
META BUILD called for experts
META BUILD Transdisciplinary Advisory Board took shape
On April 4, 2024, the European Heat Pump Association's (EHPA) R&I Committee called for experts to join META BUILD's Transdisciplinary Advisory Board (TAB). Following this initiative, we gathered 14 experts, specialise in renewable energy technologies, energy efficiency and building research, sustainable business models and assessment.

Pilot 3, Mulhouse France Kick off
META-BUILD Project Implementation Begins at KMØ,
EDF is leading the third pilot site for the META BUILD Horizon Europe Project in Mulhouse, France. On February 21, 2024, the implementation officially began, marking an exciting milestone.
On this significant day, EDF met with our partner SAUTER to discuss and plan the next steps. KMØ,'s building will serve as the pilot site where we will test innovative digital solutions for this project.
Soon, you'll be able to find our public deliverables on our website. These will provide a clear glance at our objectives and the milestones we're working towards. Your engagement and awareness are key to our collective success. Stay connected, stay informed!
Public deliverable coming soon

New European Bauhaus Festival (NEB) 2024
Brussels, Belgium
From April 9 to April 13, the META-BUILD was featured at the New European Bauhaus Festival in Brussels. The festival emphasised the role of sustainability in contemporary building practices. It highlighted how modern design principles can be combined with cutting-edge building technologies to create environments that are both eco-friendly and visually appealing. In this context, META BUILD consortium includes partners like INNOVA, who are committed not only to technological innovation but also to design excellence. This, allowed META BUILD to showcase how sustainable energy solutions can be integrated into buildings without compromising on aesthetic or functional design. Additionally by encountering potential "sister projects," META BUILD enriched its network and exchanging insights on how to advance the shared goals of sustainability and design innovation.
EUSEW 2024
Brussels, Belgium
EUSEW is the Europe’s largest annual conference on sustainable energy, organised by European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA). This year, it celebrated its 18th edition with a focus on "Net-Zero Energy Solutions for a Competitive Europe."
From June 11 to 13, META BUILD was showcased at the Boost of the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA).
By participating in EUSEW, META-BUILD was able to promote its objectives, explore new collaborations, and strengthen its ties with other projects like Weforming, thereby contributing to the collective goal of achieving net-zero energy solutions for a competitive Europe.
SET_HEAT Project Conference
Zagreb, Croatia
From June 11-13, 2024, META BUILD was prominently featured at the 3rd Conference of the SET_HEAT Project in Zagreb, Croatia. Goran Stunjek, representing our partner University of Zagreb, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, presented META BUILD's innovative approach . A round table on district heating and cooling sparked insightful discussions among attendees. This event fostered valuable exchanges of ideas and strategies within the industry.
Annual Meeting of Municipal Energy Specialists in Gdynia
On May 29, McBride International hosted the grand opening event in Brussels. The event offered valuable opportunities for META BUILD to engage directly with policymakers and public authorities and ensures that our work is recognised and understood by those who can support our project.
META BUILD was showcased alongside 13 other EU projects. The event was moderated by Prof. Vangelis Marinakis. The event saw the participation also of Elena Boskov Kovacs (Blueprint Energy Solutions), Sofía Mulero Palencia, José L. H. and Susana Martín Toral (CARTIF).
by Georgios Kormpakis, Alexios Lekidis, Elissaios Sarmas, Giannis Papias, Filippos Serepas, George Stravodimos, Vangelis Marinakis.
META BUILD announces Virtual Plenary for October 1st and 2nd.
EU Week of Regions and Cities will take place from October 14 to October 17, 2024, in Brussels. BRIDGE Workshop will be a key feature to highlight our contributions to the future of smart grid storage systems and digital innovations in the energy sector. Prof. Vaggelis Marinakis will chair the panel.
